Zelenci: The Hidden Gem Of Slovenia (& How To Get There From Kranjska Gora)

2 Comments5 min read

If you are planning a trip to Kranjska Gora, one of Slovenia’s most picturesque alpine towns, a visit to Zelenci Nature Reserve is a must. Known for its emerald-green spring, crystal-clear waters and wooden observation platforms, Zelenci is a peaceful natural gem just a short distance from Kranjska Gora. Here’s everything you need to know about how to get there easily.

Zelenci Nature Reserve is a small but breathtaking area located in the northwestern part of Slovenia, close to the Italian and Austrian borders. The name Zelenci comes from the Slovenian word for “green,” and once you see the turquoise spring and lush surroundings, you’ll understand why. It is the source of the Sava Dolinka River and offers an ideal spot for a short walk, birdwatching and photography.

Zelenci is located only 5 km from Kranjska Gora. The journey takes about 5–10 minutes by car, 40–50 minutes on foot or 15 minutes by bike. Its convenient location makes it a perfect half-day trip from Kranjska Gora.

The emerald-green color of the water comes from underground springs filtering through mineral-rich soil, creating a unique and photogenic hue. Zelenci is also home to a wetland ecosystem, where you can spot various plants, insects and bird species like ducks, herons and even rare wetland birds. The calm water and rich biodiversity make it a fascinating destination for nature enthusiasts.

How to get to Zelenci from Kranjska Gora

By car

The easiest and fastest way to reach Zelenci is by car.

  • From Kranjska Gora, follow the main road (Route 201) towards Rateče and the Italian border.
  • After about 5 km, you will see clear signs for Zelenci Nature Reserve.
  • There is a small parking area near the entrance.

Tip: Parking is free, but spaces are limited, so arrive early during weekends or peak season.

By bike or on foot

For a more scenic and active approach, take the cycling/walking path toward Rateče. The route is mostly flat, surrounded by alpine meadows and mountain views. Walking took me about 50 minutes, while biking took just 15. It’s a lovely way to connect with the landscape before even reaching Zelenci.

From the center of Kranjska Gora, follow the cycling path towards Rateče. This path is part of the scenic bike trail that connects Slovenia, Italy and Austria.

By bus

If you are taking the bus, you need to go on the bus towards Rateče and you have to get off in village called Podkoren. This station comes right after the Kranjska Gora bus station.

During the summer months, buses run from Kranjska Gora towards Rateče. You can ask the driver to stop near Zelenci. However, bus frequency is limited, so check the schedule in advance.

Best time to visit Zelenci

Zelenci is beautiful year-round:

  • Spring & Summer: Lush greenery, wildflowers and birdlife.
  • Autumn: Golden colors reflecting in the emerald water.
  • Winter: Snow-covered surroundings with magical frozen scenery (I need to tell that this is my fav season to visit Zelenci – it looks magical!)

Sunrise and early morning visits are especially rewarding due to fewer crowds and better light for photography.

Things to do at Zelenci

  • Walk along the wooden boardwalks and observation decks. Explore the spring from different angles.
  • Take photos of the emerald spring and surrounding mountains.
  • Spot local wildlife and birds.
  • Combine your visit with a trip to nearby Rateče or the Italian border town of Tarvisio.
  • Relax and reflect: Sit quietly and soak in the calm atmosphere.

One tip from my visit: take your time. The best way to enjoy Zelenci is slowly, observing details and breathing in the fresh mountain air.

My impression on Zelenci

As I first stepped onto the wooden boardwalk, I was immediately struck by the vivid turquoise water, reflecting the surrounding pine forests and snow-capped mountains. The name Zelenci (meaning “green” in Slovenian) couldn’t be more fitting. The area is quiet and serene, with the gentle sound of water flowing and birds chirping. It felt like a peaceful escape from the world.

The reserve is small but packed with natural wonders: wetlands teeming with wildlife, observation decks offering perfect photo angles and trails that meander around the spring. Even in just a short visit, you can feel completely immersed in nature.

Tips for visiting Zelenci

  • Wear comfortable walking shoes.
  • There are no shops or cafés at the reserve, so bring water or snacks. There’s a restaurant at the parking lot, so you can yourself something to eat or drink.
  • Respect nature and do not swim in the spring or leave litter.
  • Visit early in the day to avoid crowds.
